David Bennett Cohen has been a professional musician for more than 60 years. Best known for his innovative keyboard playing as an original, founding member of the ’60’s Rock band, Country Joe and the Fish, he is an equally accomplished guitar player who has been involved in numerous music scenes throughout his varied career.

Nas, The Palace Theatre, Albany, 8pm

Timeless poet and rhyme-master Nas, delivered his first full-length album Illmatic in 1994. Nas went on to release 14 subsequent albums, 8 of which are multi-platinum and platinum including: Nastradamus, Stillmatic, God’s Son, and Street’s Disciple. With 16 GRAMMY nominations, Nas released King’s Disease in 2020, giving Nas his first ever GRAMMY win for “Best Rap Album,” and released King’s Disease II, a sequel to the GRAMMY Award winning album, produced by Nas and Hit-Boy. Most recently, Nas released the third installment of the King’s Disease series. With no features, King’s Disease III was produced by Hit-Boy and executive produced by Nas and Hit-Boy. Most recently, Nas and Hit-Boy released Magic 3, featuring 15 brand new tracks, also marking the final chapter of the legendary run for the prolific rapper-producer duo. Magic 3 serves as the duo’s sixth album together in the last 3 years and serves as the third installment to the Magic series.

This two-week program provides students with a space to hone their talents and express themselves creatively. In addition to his work as a recording artist, concert performer, storyteller and activist, he’s performed on Broadway and worked extensively in television, radio and film. As a music-maker, Chapin maintains two long and productive parallel careers, both as a respected contemporary folk artist and as a pioneer in the field of children’s music. During the height of the Covid shutdowns, Tom and his daughters, The Chapin Sisters, streamed 200 live concerts under the moniker “Mornings with Papa Tom.”

Interview:

I had the chance to sit down with the fabulous Fagitty Anne. Fagitty Anne is a wonderful Drag Queen who performs all over the Capital District and NYC alike. Fagitty Anne runs an Music Monday Karaoke on Mondays from 10pm-2am at Water Works Pub in Albany. Besides just being the host with the most, Fagitty Anne treats us to her own voice as well. Before the singing began Fagitty Ann told me a little about her story.

RRX: Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

FA: I am from a small town nestled in the Helderberg mountains. I grew up in a musically gifted household. We didn’t have any electronics growing up so my sisters and I had a lot of time to focus on our music.

RRX: What made you want to get into drag?

FA: Before I started performing in drag I used to help the other queens get ready backstage. After a while of everyone telling me to try it, I eventually entered my first competition. I placed at the top, and I haven’t stopped since.

RRX: What do your performances usually consist of?

FA: When you come to a Fagitty Anne show I like there to be versatility in my performances.

Whether it be singing live, performing numbers which I choreographed, Lip syncing to comedy mixes that I make, or a good old-fashioned ballad.

RRX: What do you want people to take away from your performances?

FA: I like my shows to be a place where people can go to and laugh, cry, just have a good time. Take their minds off of whatever may be bothering them, and get distracted from the craziness of life.

RRX: Where do you perform?

FA: You can find me at my weekly show “Music Mondays Karaoke” every monday at Waterworks Pub in Albany.

Besides that I perform in different cities every weekend all around the east coast. From Upstate NY, to New York City, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, Road Island, Pennsylvania… The list continues.

RRX: Tell us about your karaoke on Mondays.

FA: Music Mondays Karaoke is a night at Waterworks Pub in Albany where you can come to a judgment free, and supporting environment to sing some songs and get a couple of drinks crafted by the fabulous Jason Martino. Everyone who comes is just there to have a fun time.

Legally Blonde: The Musical Begins Performances at Cohoes Music Hall

Playhouse Stage Company presents new production of the popular, high-energy musical comedy based on the 2001 novel and MGM Film of the same name

Cohoes, N.Y. (July 11, 2024) – Beginning tongiht at Cohoes Music Hall, Playhouse Stage Company opens a new production of the popular show Legally Blonde: The Musical. The production will play through August 11, with 7:30pm evening performances on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and 2:00pm matinee performances on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Playhouse Stage Company has been producing free, outdoor summer musicals at Albany’s Park Playhouse since 1989, and has been presenting musical theatre year-round at the historic Cohoes Music Hall since 2016.

Preview performances will be held on July 17 at 7:30pm and July 19 at 2pm. As of the 7:30pm press opening on July 19, complimentary tickets are available throughout the run for members of the media and local theatre press who wish to cover or review the production. Based on the 2001 novel by Amanda Brown, and the 2001 MGM film adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl and Fashion Merchandising Major from Malibu who beats the odds and matriculates at Harvard Law School in a longshot scheme win back her college boyfriend. An inspiring tale of staying true to yourself, Legally Blonde is at turns touching, hilarious, and poignant. The musical, featuring a book by Heather Hach, with music and lyrics by Neil Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe, won praise as a high-energy, fun, upbeat adaptation when it debuted on Broadway in 2007. The Broadway production was later filmed and broadcast on MTV, a first.

The Playhouse Stage production is directed and choreographed by the company’s Director of Education and Associate Artistic Director, AshleySimone Kirchner, who has been working with PSC since 2010. Musical Director Brandon Jones will lead the ten-person backstage band. Scenery is designed by Marc Christopher and fabricated by Upstate Scenic, costumes are by Minah Smith-Tucker, lighting is by PJ Davis, and sound is designed by Tommy Rosati.

As with previous productions this season, the cast features a mix of both professional and Playhouse Stage student talent. The cast is led by Selma Fabregas, a longtime PSC student and recent Shaker High graduate, as Elle Woods. Ms. Fabregas, who will join the Cortlandt Theatre Program this fall, won critical praise for her PSC work as Lily in The Secret Garden, Ilyse in Spring Awakening, and others. She and her fellow students are joined by an array of professional talent in principal roles, including Patrick Ryan Sullivan as Professor Callahan. Mr. Sullivan appeared on Broadway as Julian Marsh in 42^nd Street, Gaston in Disney’s Beauty & The Beast, and others, and has worked on tour and in regional theatres across the country. Longtime Playhouse Stage leading lady Molly Rose McGrath (Patsy Cline, Sweeney Todd, Ragtime) plays the comic role of Paulette Bonafanté, a salon owner who befriends Elle and helps her to find confidence in herself. Former Playhouse Stage student and recent Hart School grad Jon Maltz, last featured in the Playhouse Stage production of Head Over Heels, plays Emmett Forest, a kind and unassuming law school teaching assistant who takes Elle under his wing.

Tickets are now on sale at the Cohoes Music Hall and Playhouse Stage box office. Adult tickets are $35.00, with $25.00 available for Seniors (65 and older), and $18 tickets for children and students with identification. Week Twenty-Nine: Jesse Sample’s Freak of the Week “Nuevo”

This is Jesse Sample. As time goes by, we find things that suit us, and we tend to do them more. I can go to Hannaford and attain all my favorite snack foods and walk out the door in 7 mins. No doubling back. Start with the Pepperoni and work your way to the freeze pops. I also go running a few times a week and like to have a glass of water on my nightstand when I go to sleep. I listen to Breaking Points with Krystal and Saager 5 days a week.

We all have our go-to’s. And it’s only natural. These well-worn paths save us from being paralyzed by an infinite number of choices at any given point in our day. We go with cool ranch.

But sometimes it is essential for us to venture off the well-worn path and see what else is out there. Other people live very different lives and there is a wealth of perspective if you’re looking. It is so refreshing when you step out of your normal routine and realize you are just a passenger on this big, beautiful world. You are not your habits, or your biases, or your beliefs, or your fears.

Sometimes, I walk through my life and assume I got it all figured out but what if I don’t? Might that be a gift of some sort. What if the universe is a hell of a lot more generous than good ole fallible me? Maybe we short change ourselves when we stick to what we know.

I’m a little late to this party; it’s a competition that took place in May. But I have a good excuse here – I was training. What was I training for? How did I train? To answer the first, I was training for the Space-Out competition in Seoul, South Korea. And to answer the second, I did nothing, which was kind of the point.

Four thousand people applied, and one hundred and seventeen were selected to spend 90 minutes on a yoga mat and do absolutely nothing – no activity, no looking at their phones, no talking. Their heart rates were monitored, and the person who had the most stable heart rate at the end won.

See, South Korea is very busy. It’s a high-achievement culture that focuses on success, and along with that, being busy. To the average Korean, doing nothing is going against the natural order. And that’s not just Korea. Beijing, Rotterdam, Taipei, Hong Kong and Tokyo are having their own versions of the Space-Out competition.

In America, could we have this? Would it matter? Would this be any different than having lawn seats at a matinee show at SPAC? I guess we value “space out” time more in our regular lives than other countries, but we still don’t “sit still.” We’re still on our phones every two minutes. Maybe we could use a Space-Out competition. So I propose we do this. Start applying, and we’ll pick as many people as we can pack in Washington Park in Albany.

Washington Park, we’re coming. I guess, I don’t know. If I can get off the couch and find my phone.

Zoo Green 6 – Interview – Thanks for Asking! – by Liam Sweeny.

We came across Zoo Green 6 in our travels and hit them with some Q&A. This is what they had to say.

RRX: Music genres are difficult for some artists. Some strictly adhere; others not so much. What is your perspective on the genre you play, or the genres you hover around?

ZG6: we play what we call Hip-Pop Punk! Cool riffs, awesome drums and bars! With some punk and love angst!

RRX: A band is a business. A business of love, but you got to work for it. Let’s pretend, instead of a band, you all owned a business. What would it be, and why would it be good?

ZG6: hmm? Since our member is professional wrestler “Firework” Foxx Vinyer , we’d prolly have a bad ass wrestling promotion!

RRX: Love is a big part of music. We’re talking first loves here. Lots of cool stories about first loves and the things we do for those loves. Can you (or, in the case of a band, one member) talk about your first love, especially if you did something cool to express that love? (No names needed.)

ZG6: Damn , to quote the nature boy, “with a tear in my eye! Most of our records song are about love and heartbreak. Most are about the one that got away for Foxx. She meant and still does mean everything. She drew our album cover! MJ you’re the real MVP!

RRX: Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Or so they say. Whether you’re off the wagon, on it, or never been, there’s something you got a thirst for. What are some of your basically harmless vices?

ZG6: Lol . First would be pretzel rods. We consume so much when jamming. We sometime downplay our songs complexity when we are asking other musicians to play live with us. Sometimes hard to bring the tunes to life when only 2 of us pumping out the jams! Last but not least I’d say just wanting every song to change the world.

And not knowing when to toss the trash

RRX: How does practice go? Is the road practice enough, or do you have a practice shack? If so, how does it look? What’s on the walls? What cool sh*t is in there?

ZG6: we write, practice and record everything right in Foxx’s apartment!

He is a professional wrestler and actor so his apt is full of action figures and tights and championship belts and all the stuff an almost 40 year old man would and should have in a cave.
