Robin and Linda Williams, The Linda, Albany, 8pm-10pm

Robin and Linda are closing in on a five-decade-long career that has included 24 personal recordings, thousands of concerts on three continents, a Robert Altman-directed movie, and hundreds of performances on NPR’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and other radio and television shows. As live performers, they are second to none and are at home on whatever stage they find themselves, be it a tiny coffee house or bar, or a large, storied concert hall or festival. As gifted songwriters, Robin and Linda have earned the respect of their musical peers, their songs having been recorded by such well-known artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tom T. Hall, Tim and Mollie O’Brien, Mary Black, The Seldom Scene, and Emmylou Harris, to name a few.

Their latest CD, “A Better Day A-Coming,” spent the summer and fall of 2021 in the top 10 of the FAI Folk Radio Charts with their single of the same name ending the year as the number 3 Top Song, the album ending the year as the number 11 Top Album, and Robin and Linda ending as number 13 on the list of Top Artists. The success of the second single, “The Old Lovers Waltz,” helped spawn a music video which, to date, has generated thousands of views.

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, The Egg, Albany, 8pm

Part of the Guest Music Presentations Series

Born Troy Andrews, Trombone Shorty got his start (and nickname) earlier than most: at four, he made his first appearance at Jazz Fest performing with Bo Diddley; at six, he was leading his own brass band; and by his teenage years, he was hired by Lenny Kravitz to join the band he assembled for his Electric Church World Tour. Shorty’s proven he’s more than just a horn player, though. Catch a gig, open the pages of the New York Times or Vanity Fair, flip on any late-night TV show and you’ll see an undeniable star with utterly magnetic charisma, a natural born showman who can command an audience with the best of them. Since 2010, he’s released four chart topping studio albums; toured with everyone from Jeff Beck to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; collaborated across genres with Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, ZHU, Zac Brown, Normani, Ringo Starr, and countless more; played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, Newport Jazz, and nearly every other major festival; performed four times at the GRAMMY Awards, five times at the White House, on dozens of TV shows, and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala, where he was honored with his own Muppet; launched the Trombone Shorty Foundation to support youth music education; and received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for his first children’s book. Meanwhile in New Orleans, Shorty now leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness, hosts the annual Voodoo Threauxdown shows that have drawn guests including Usher, Nick Jonas, Dierks Bentley, Andra Day, and Leon Bridges to sit in with his band, and has taken over the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s hallowed final set, which has seen him closing out the internationally renowned gathering after performances by the likes of Neil Young, the Black Keys, and Kings of Leon.

Sawyer Fredericks, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 8pm-10pm

Sawyer Fredericks’ honest and elegantly stripped down Americana “free range folk” style incorporates elements of blues, roots, rock and jazz

Americana singer-songwriter Sawyer Fredericks, hailing from his family farm in central New York State, cut his teeth at the age of 13, playing local farmers markets, open mics, and small venues. With his deep, beyond-his-years original lyrics and melodies, raw, soulful vocals, and powerful live performances, Fredericks seemed an unlikely match for reality TV, but having been scouted by casting directors at 15, he quickly won over broad audiences with his genuine delivery and unique arrangements of classic songs, going on to win season 8 of NBC’s The Voice.

From his first album, A Good Storm, to his latest, Flowers For You, Fredericks’ elegantly stripped down style has grown, while staying true to his roots and maintaining an impressive blend of soulful folk, blues, and rock. No Depression hailed 2018’s Hide Your Ghost as “a bluesy folk rocker with no-frills production that relies on Fredericks’ raw voice to carry the emotional weight.” In 2020, with song premieres in People Magazine, American Songwriter, DittyTV and an album preview in Billboard, Fredericks released Flowers For You. With this project, “Fredericks is expanding his sound even more, moving from bluesy folk into more expansive Americana, rock and tines of jazz” (Concert Hopper). The album was included in No Depression Readers’ 50 Favorite Roots Music Albums of 2020, and several tracks won top awards from the 18th annual Independent Music Awards. Since the release of Flowers For You, “Born” has been in rotation on SiriusXM’s Coffee House channel and was covered by Amazon Music’s editorial “Fresh Folk Americana” playlist.

Planetarium Party (Virgo SZN) / Special Very Guest Mauskovic Dance Band! No Fun, Troy, 8pm-2am

Planetarium Party – A monthly mystic disco hosted by First House Rising Astrology & Syd Silvair

Mauskovic Dance Band – https://mauskovicdanceband.bandcamp.com

Amsterdam’s Mauskovic Dance Band are a musical family in the widest sense: not only are four of the five band members related, but like any family they are always on the move. They have been carrying out their experiments in hazy rhythms and dubby percussive workouts since 2017. In the early days, the boys fused their love of Afro-Caribbean poly rhythms with a no-wave sound palette to create their own unique danceable chaos. Check out their inaugural 7”s for Bongo Joe Records out of Geneva.

They picked up the ears of British label Soundway, and subsequently released an EP and their debut self-titled album in 2019. Armed with an arsenal of hypnotic grooves and airtight arrangements, they cemented their reputation as a live act to fire up dance floors, and took their instruments on the road everywhere from Russia to Mexico, with plenty of European festivals in between.

For their next chapter, the group dived further into their vast array of echos and spring reverbs, and fine-tuned their sound system-inspired, post-punk aesthetic. A four track EP Shadance Hall, complete with dub versions, came out via Dutch label Dekmantel in 2020, and they will showcase this latest evolution of their sound when they perform this summer.

The first Sunday of the month

2:00pm – 4:00pm│Doors 1:30pm│Casting begins at 1:45 pm│Readings begin at 2:00

  • Playwrights should bring a highlighted script for each of their actors and one extra for stage directions
  • Bring a short scene (7 – 8 minutes). Cast your actors from the audience, including your fellow playwrights. Give them brief directions and then put them on stage to read your script. We’ll go around the room after the reading and let everyone give a “popcorn” reaction (one word!).
  • Playwrights should bring a highlighted script for each of their actors and one extra for stage directions
  • Each meeting will include 6 or 7 scenes selected at random from those submitted. After the readings we’ll have time to hang out and get acquainted.
  • This event will be co-hosted by Michael Wells-Oakes and Vivian Nesbitt
  • Playwright Nice! We foster a diverse community that has a great time making art and helping one another get better. Excessive profanity, explicit sexual themes, and “humor” that unkindly targets a specific group undermines this goal. It is up to the discretion of the host to enforce the house standards.
