Soft Cell – Debut Album Reissue

Remember that song, “Tainted Love?” I dug that song when it came out. It was one of those songs that put you in a mood. If I wasn’t five when it came out, it might have been a different mood, but the only moods I had mastered was coloring in the lines and getting the keys to the cookie jar. I actually knew of the song long after it came out in ’81, in a debut that also included the UK chart-toppers “Bedsitter” and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye”. Which is to say that the band responsible for these songs, Soft Cell, had staying power.

And apparently the band has had staying power too. That original album, which was named Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, by the way, is being re-issued, release date October 20^th. And we’re not talking a dustoff and a little remastering here and there. This reissue is like the dress-shirt being re-issued as a three-piece suit.

The centerpiece of this particular reissue is a six-CD, ninety-eight track Super Deluxe Edition, 40 never-before-released tracks. And of course it was remastered, by none other than Barry Gint, mastering engineer, his resume padded by his work with Madonna, Prince, Puff Daddy, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, The Beatles, Oasis, Keane, Beach Boys, Jessie J, Rod Stewart, Paul Simon, Van Halen, Michael McDonald and A-ha.

This thing has fully instrumental versions of the whole album, live recordings, outtakes from BBC and radio appearances. If you can imagine taking a band’s first album and doing everything imaginable to it so that it’s packing ninety-eight tracks, six CDs, you would end up with the reissue being just as much a work of art as the original.
