Precious Souls – Help Fight Child Abuse – Giving Tuesday

Child abuse and neglect is endemic in our society. Each year, more than 600,000 children are abused in the U.S. It is estimated thatr 1.8 million children received prevention services from child welfare agencies.

The youngest are disproportionately vulnerable. Children in the first year of their life are 15% of all victims, and more than a quarter (28%) of child maltreatment victims are no more than 2 years old.

This abuse and neglect follow children into adulthood with a range of effects, from post-traumatic stress to violence and drug use. And child welfare agencies face enormous backlogs and a legal system that often leaves them with limited options when they encounter abuse or neglect.

Michael “Vegas” Nacy has had to navigate this complicated landscape throughout his life, and he is forming Precious Jewels, a non-profit to guide currently abused children into a better space, with better outcomes.

The first step Nacy is taking is getting incorporated as a not-for-profit 501(c)3, which is difficult and costly. With that established, the first move will be to supplement the efforts of organizations and foundations already working in the community, such as the William Yager Memorial Foundation.

Once Precious Jewels has some ground under it, it will be looking for a brick-and-mortar location for a safe space for children at-risk, with opportunities for creative education.

It can’t be overestimated the impact a safe space can have on a child in need. It can establish safety and may be the only place a child feels embraced and cared for. It can be a rallying point for oft-overlooked services; it saves lives.

This Giving Tuesday, many national organizations will be watering their plants with the nation’s goodwill. We ask you to donate to Precious Souls and plant a seed in your local neighborhood instead.
