2024 WEEK TWO JESSE SAMPLE’S FREAK OF THE WEEK “What Will They Think Of Me?”

This is Jesse Sample along with some of the neighborhood dogs down here in Monterrey, MX . This week’s song is about the private lives we live in our heads. It’s central question, “what will they think of me?” has been a big part of my life and I’m measuring my success on my ability to distance myself it from it.

That bridge after the second verse is where the idea began. I had to start somewhere, and I thought experimenting in the C minor Hungarian scale would be a fine start. This scale has always been a rich well of fresh ideas for me. I created a compelling harmony and an interesting melody, but I wasn’t finding the song there. I put the idea in my back pocket and started writing fresh in D# major, the relative major of C minor.

Six hours later, I had a chorus and a verse section that I felt had potential and I had a feeling for I what I wanted to say, but no lyrics or clear melodic ideas. I tried that C minor Hungarian section I wrote previously to at least see if I could use it as bridge section and it clicked and the whole thing shined. And when that happened, I felt that I had the wind at my back and that I could carve out my lyrics and bring it home. And maybe there’s something to that, in life in general. We don’t really know how the process works but we can trust that sometimes it will work, no matter what they think of you.
