This is Jesse Sample. Profound change is not easy. Sometimes the world puts forth circumstances where there is no choice but to change. If an asteroid were to hit our part of North America, we might be forced to do things differently and change what we consume and what we do with our days. Our perspective about our existence would probably get rocked. And we would be the same people, but now living very different lives.
There is also the question of changing from within. This is a bit more ambiguous. Assuming there are no asteroids, unplanned pregnancies, or the infinite number of other ways your life can be effected from the outside, the universe will grant you the permission to live the rest of your days in a similar fashion. Any change must be generated from within. You can comfortably keep your same habits and maintain your current point of view. In fact, not changing seems far easier
…but maybe not. Can an unbearable situation in one’s life make change, the comfortable option? How do we calculate the line in the sand where change becomes easier? I wrestle with this. But maybe that line is one of the few things, I actually control in this life. And maybe that’s a real good thing.
