This is Jesse Sample. What are the things that live rent-free in your head? Who are the people that dwell in the high-rise apartment buildings in the downtown of your mind? I’ve been to a few funerals this year. We won’t be running into these people at Bruegger’s Bagels or at Hoffman’s Carwash but we do bump into them often on the streets and the avenues of our inner-worlds. It’s our own personal city inside of our heads. We are the mayor, the landlord, the bartender and the garbage man.

When someone in my life dies, here in this realm… I picture a close friend from out of town who’s arriving at my apartment a few hours before I get home. They got the key and are free to raid the fridge or take a nap. When I get out of work, we’ll catch up. We can shower up and hit the corner bar or just linger in the living room, whatever. We’ve got an eternity.
