This is Jesse Sample. The term” gaslighting” get thrown around a lot these days. “He gaslit me” or “she spent our whole relationship gaslighting me.” What are people trying to do when they accuse others of gaslighting them?

Let’s move this exploration to a place I understand. A person might say, “Jesse, you don’t really love lasagna. You’re just pretending.”  The person making this declaration could be attempting to make me feel crazy. For that to happen, I would need to have a doubt in my sincere love for lasagna. If my love for delicious pasta is true, which it is, then they can keep talking and they’d be wasting their breath.

But when someone calls you a narcissist, that’s somewhat of a different thing. To some degree, they are right. Even the most generous of us can never understand and empathize with 100 percent accuracy. We must go with what we know. Which is us. If someone calls you a narcissist, they might be the one struggling with their relationship to the world. If they accuse you of gaslighting, they are revealing that they harbor doubts.
