Submarining – The Weird Side of the Internet – by Liam Sweeny.

Every time I hear about a new dating trend on social media, I think it’s a gross sex thing. Maybe that’s just where my mind goes, or maybe just vast life experience of someone saying “Hey did you hear about.[    ]? And it’s a gross sex thing. Like if you heard of a Cincinnati pretzel, you of course would think that’s a sex thing, right? Actually, it might just be a pretzel thing seeing as how I made it up, and you’re welcome for that, Cincinnati. But c’mon, that could’ve been a sex thing if I hadn’t fessed up.

So this is not a sex trend, but a dating trend. Possibly also a sex thing. It’s called “submarining.” Now tell me you didn’t see that and think it was a sex thing. But no, ‘tis not. Submarining is actually a type of ghosting, except that instead of a full-on ghosting, they come back here and there, mainly when they’re bored, lonely, or horny. Then they “come up for air.”

Is this anything but a person being desperate and having a short memory? So I have to wonder if this is more something men do more, or women do more? A few years ago, I would’ve said men do this more, but these days my vote is that’s it probably dead even. It’s just a cultural think as opposed to a gender thing. In a way, how is it anything different than having DoorDash delivering because who can be bothered going to Applebee’s, right? For the record, I’ve never eaten at Applebee’s, so I have no idea if you can get DoorDash to go there.

I’m not sure how submarining fits with Tinder. Do we really need to submarine people when there’s a whole damn app for it. So a cellphone and DoorDash some condoms and hit the depths.
