Week Thirty-Two: Jesse Sample’s Freak of the Week “Bad Breaks”

This is Jesse Sample. I spend a little time in Atlantic City every year. The place haunts me, even now. For most of us, it’s a place to have to play a little, attend a seminar, have a nice dinner or see a show. But for some folks, Atlantic City is something else.

For some people, Atlantic City is a place to scratch an itch. Some people love to gamble in casinos. And for most of them, it’s a nice way to spend a weekend and let off a little steam and sometimes even win a little money. They check in to Bally’s, Caesars Palace, or the Borgata put their bag into their room, maybe catch a bite and play some cards. When their done, they pay 12 to 14 dollars for some gelato and turn it in.

Then there are some people don’t know how to stop, and things go bad. The house always wins but that’s not the real problem. Some folks can’t stop until they lose it all. You could give em a million dollars and they’d eventually lose it all. When I imagine what it’s like for a guy to tell his wife that he gambled away his house and saving account, it strikes me as tragic and extremely sad. Some of us can’t help ourselves.
