Week Thirty-Five: Jesse Sample’s Freak of the Week “Big Will’s Lonely Heart”

Jesse Sample’s Freak of the Week airs EVERY WEDNESDAY at 6pm EASTERN on RadioRadioX.com 

This is Jesse Sample. The four of us were sitting along the seawall at York Beach. Mark starts in on the story of Big Will. I learn later that Big Will was just the name given to him from afar. Big Will could be named Stewart or perhaps Devin…or any name. Big Will would hide behind these two big yellow tubes and spy on girls out on the beach. When the girls would go out into the waves to chill and hang out, Big Will would go out as well, with his tubes in tow and watch them from a distance. He might even stack them and peep at the girls from between them.

Anybody watching could easily see what he was up to. There are big holes in the story that I didn’t fill in/ Was Big Will a grown man or a 14-year-old boy who never developed any game along with his exceptional size? I chose to form a picture of the latter.

And in this frame, I saw a kid who needed a friend. He needed the kind of friend who would harass him to abandon the sad safety of his tubes and go say hi to the girls on the beach. This friend would know that real love and a well lived life requires taking a chance and being vulnerable, and he would inspire Will to believe in himself. Big Will lacked self-belief and would have been well served by a kindhearted and persistent friend who knew that.
