We love our pets. They’re family members that wake you up at 4am for no f*cking reason and walk on your keyboard while you’re trying to check your emails, again, at 4 in the morning. But we love them. Did you know that about 60 percent of people won’t leave their home during a disaster if they can’t bring their pets. The idea of our pets being anything but our eternal buddies (and cats) is unthinkable. But a zoo in Denmark has other ideas. It would like your pets, in particular, your “used” pets, to feed its lions.
The Aalborg Zoo in Denmark invites people to donate their pets to feed the lions and other big cats. Importantly, they don’t take dogs and cats. They want “chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and horses. So two pets and two animals that belong on a farm list. Still.
“Chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs form an important part of the diet of our predators – especially the European lynx, which needs whole prey that resembles what it would naturally hunt in the wild,” the zoo wrote.
“In zoos we have a responsibility to imitate the natural food chain of the animals – in terms of both animal welfare and professional integrity,” the post continued. “That way, nothing goes to waste – and we ensure natural behavior, nutrition and well-being of our predators.”
So basically, they euthanize the animals and feed the carcasses to the cats. It’s not like they’re going to throe Sparkles in the cage with a hungry tiger. But still…
Would you do this? If Sparkles was not long for the light, ans needed to be put down anyway, would you give it to the zoo? Is it a good deed or is it body desecration?
Better yet, would you do it if they paid you?
