Benefit Performance of Mother Jones in Heaven – a musical by Si Kahn – featuring Vivian Nesbitt with accompaniment by John Dillon, Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, 3-5pm
A BENEFIT PERFORMANCE for the Caffe Lena School of Music!
The musical drama tackling social justice is written and composed by Si Kahn, who has been touring the world over the past 50 years with renowned artists such as Pete Seeger. Kahn’s creative ability to write “Mother Jones” is supported by the playwrights’ well-earned credentials as a singer, songwriter, activist and grassroots leader.
“Mother Jones in Heaven” opens as the infamous Mary Harris “Mother” Jones, portrayed by Vivian Nesbitt, enters heaven. Through the course of the 90 minute musical, featuring 12 of Si Kahn’s orginal songs, Mother Jones balances her methods and practices with her outcomes. The issues are as poignant and as timely today as they were in 1900 when Mother Jones was fighting for better working conditions and human rights throughout North America.
Actress Vivian Nesbitt (of Breaking Bad, The Night Shift, and Longmire) is also the Director of Caffe Lena’s School of Music.
“Vivian Nesbitt truly becomes Mother Jones in the Si Kahn musical, ‘Mother Jones in Heaven.’ Ms. Nesbitt brings a fiery determination and keen sensitivity to the character of Mother Jones which ensures that her portrayal is not simply two-dimensional, but instead breathes deeply as the living embodiment of ‘the Most Dangerous Woman in America.’ This play is great entertainment, great theatre, great history, great education… ‘Mother Jones in Heaven’ deserves to be seen by all generations of playgoers who will be inspired by her life and her example.” – John P. Beck, Co-director, Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives and Associate Professor, School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, Michigan State University
