2024 WEEK SEVEN: JESSE SAMPLE’S FREAK OF THE WEEK – “Make Myself Blue”

Written by on February 14, 2024

Jesse Sample’s Freak of the Week Airs at 8pm Eastern EVERY WEDNESDAY on RadioRadioX.com

This is Jesse Sample. Many times when I sit down in front of the blank page for my weekly project, the first chord I play is minor. My favorite music by my favorite artists is all about dissonance. Conflict in my life instructs me an artist and as an art consumer. I need to relate when I’m feeling blue.

This song is in G minor and the main drag of the verse, intro and outro is back and forth from
G minor the A#13. A# is the relative major of G minor, but the variation that makes it an A#13 creates a tension, and hence is called a tension chord. The chorus  introduces the C minor chord and we continue using our A#13 and our G minor in the chorus.

Finally, the bridge arrives. In this section, I introduced the D minor to the mix. I wrote an English sonnet for the bridge and as I ironed out what I wanted to say, I broke a few rules in regard to the meter, which is necessary sometimes. We don’t listen to music to hear someone following the rules. Human expression is messy and structure must operate in service to it, not the other way around. Since the days of Beethoven, at least.

There is power to sad songs, dare I say an alchemy. In relating to someone else’s struggle we become aware that we are not alone and with that experience we can take our place in the human community. A good song can turn your blues into gold.

I hope you enjoy the track and be sure to subscribe to this page and go to Jessesample.com to sign up for the mailing list for exclusive tracks and
